WS is 93!

Founders’ Night last June 30 brought together former and current SGV partners to celebrate Founder Wash SyCip’s (WS) 93rd birthday at the Makati Shangri-la Hotel. Co-Founder Fred Velayo (AMV), who passed away last 27 May, was honored with a moment of silence and a video tribute.

In his opening remarks, Chairman and Managing Partner Vic Noel said “We thank our founders for that life-changing decision they made almost 70 years ago to establish SGV. The current partners are deeply grateful to them – and to our retired partners – who are all great stewards – for constantly inspiring and encouraging us to do our best,” he said.

As a birthday gift, SGV Foundation made a donation to the Zero Dropout Education Scheme, a program initiated by WS and implemented by the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development – Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI). The program aims to reduce the public elementary dropout rate in the country to 0% by offering loans to poor families for school supplies, projects and activities. CARD MRI President and CEO Dorie Torres was present to formally receive the donation.

Staying true to the Spanish theme throughout the night, the Fundacion Centro Flamenco Dancers entertained the guests. The SGV Glee Club also sang a number of Spanish favorites such as Eres Tu, Historia de Un Amor, and No Importa la Distancia. They concluded the night with Amigos Para Siempre or Friends for Life, a fitting tribute to the friendship that started SGV.
