SGV Risk Services Group helps IIA-P organize 2015 ACIIA Conference


The Asian Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (ACIIA) held its annual conference from 4-6 November 2015 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. This annual event, a gathering of the confederation’s member-Institutes from across Asia, was hosted by The Institute of Internal Auditors – Philippines (IIA-P). With the theme “The New Normal in Internal Auditing,” the event aimed to bring participants up to speed on the developments and best practices in governance, risk and controls; technology and fraud; public sector auditing; as well as business trends.

The ACIIA dates back to March 1999, when one of its founding members, IIA Hong Kong, hosted what was then called the Asian Summit of Internal Auditing. Its registration with the Registrar of Societies in Malaysia was officially approved in 2006. Today, the ACIIA is composed of 17 IIA Affiliates in the Asia Pacific region from Australia, Azerbaijan, China, Chinese Taiwan, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. To achieve its vision of being the regional voice of the internal auditing profession, the ACIIA aims to provide dynamic leadership for the profession as well as coordinate the development, enhancement and promotion of internal auditing in Asia.

During the event, SGV Chief Risk Officer and Risk Services Head Leo Matignas moderated the session on the top issues of stakeholders on internal audit, while EY Malaysia Risk Services Partner Philip Rao was the moderator of the discussion on the emerging ethical issues facing the profession. Meanwhile, EY Singapore Performance Improvement Partner Sam Wong gave a lecture on the government of the future, and EY US Performance Improvement Senior Manager Bill Fryberger, discussed how to get ahead of cybercrime. As an honorary member of the IIA-P, SGV Founder Washington SyCip also graced the event with his presence, talking during the breakout session for special guests, which included IIA Global Chairman Larry Harrington, who was the keynote speaker for the conference, and past IIA-P presidents.

Several people from SGV’s Risk Services were heavily involved in organizing the event, including SGV Senior Adviser Becca Sarmenta, who is also the IIA-P Chairman for 2014-2015, and SGV Partner Ian Canlas, who is the chairman of the IIA-P Convention Committee. SGV Senior Directors May Cypres and Marinet Esmeralda served as the Program Committee Head and Plenary Session Committee Head, Director Mike Saniel was the Speakers Management Committee Head, and Associate Director Renjay Chua led the Breakout Session Committee composed of Ma. Jhoanna Ilyssa Agustin, Wynner Ngoslab, Beverlyn Cepillo and Aiza Collamar. SGV Associate Director Jo Anne Illescas headed the Firm’s sponsorship team comprising Jerome Punzal and Julius Hernandez. In addition, a number of breakout sessions were hosted by SGV Director Paulo Lastimosa.
